We always look forward to the annual CIU Conference weekend, and this year was one of the best yet.
Friday’s Beer & Trades Exhibition at the Norbreck Castle Hotel ensured that proceedings got off to a lively start. The day was officially opened by Vice President of the CIU, John Tobin, who welcomed a record number of exhibitors, occupying more than twice the space than last year’s event. CIU members were out in force, taking time to meet suppliers and to enjoy valuable networking opportunities with old and new club colleagues alike. The Dransfield’s stand was busier than ever, as we took time to demonstrate our product range, including our exclusive Power Play digital club gaming machine – launched at last year’s event and proving a bit hit with clubs. Our more traditional products were just as popular; our bingo and speed pool sessions attracting particularly high numbers.
Elsewhere, Sky Sports’ nine-dart challenge was a big hit, with Peter ‘one-dart’ Manley and Wayne ‘Hawaii 501’ Mardle proving a big hit with members.
Later in the evening, the annual Executive Dinner at the Blackpool Hilton saw the committee welcoming special guests including former Sports Minister Gerry Sutcliffe and the Mayor of Blackpool, Val Haynes, in one of her final official outings before standing down after 20 years of council service.
Saturday’s events included the all-important Annual Meeting. Given the timing of the event, coming so close to the general election, the Presidential address was as important to members as ever. Amongst a range of topics, George Dawson CMD, warned delegates of potential future threats to clubs in relation to corporation tax and other government measures that might affect their mutuality. He also urged members to ensure full understanding of PRS rules to avoid being caught out by unnecessary bills. However, his overriding message was that of support and collaboration; reminding members of the guidance and advice available from CIU’s Branch Secretaries and the NEC, year-round.
Later, the final of the ever-popular National Quiz, for which we are proud to once again to be the sponsor, took place. Ten teams battled it out for the title, which was finally won (by just half a point) by the Gosforth Empire Social Club team. More on this nail-biting event in our next blog...
All-in, the weekend proved as valuable as ever for all concerned; many thanks to the CIU for putting on such a great event. We’ve already got the dates in our diary for next year: 8/9th April 2016. See you there?
